Hi!

Since this is my first post on this blog, I'll start writing something about myself and how I got my diagnosis.

My name is Cecilie. I am from Denmark and I live in a medium-sized city in Jutland, the main peninsula of Denmark. I am 16 years old. When the summer break is over, I am starting in high school/college. I don't know what you call it in English to be honest.

As I am a girl, many people will maybe think that this blog is only about being a girl with autism. This is also relevant for autistic boys and their parents. That's what people have said on my Danish blog.

My diagnosis is "Atypical Autism", probably one of the most uncertain diagnosises on the spectrum. Atypical autism can literally be anything. It can be severe case with mental retardation or things like that, but it can also be extremely high-functioning with a very high intelligence. I'm a high-functioning autist, but I have average intelligence. Honestly, I don't really know all the facts about autism. I only know the few things that my school taught me - and of course my experiences.

I was diagnosed when I was 7 years old. My school and family always thought that I was different from the other kids. They actually signed me up for the psychiatric hospital when I was only 4 or 5 years old, but as there are many people in the line, it takes lots of time to get there.

I took any kinds of tests. Balance tests, IQ tests and even rhythmical tests. They putted me into random social situations to see how I reacted. At first they were sure that I had aspergers syndrome, but then they saw me flapping with my hands - something that "aspies" rarely or never do, but many infantile autists do very often. Therefore they gave me the diagnosis "Atypical Autism", which for me means that I mostly have aspergers-traits, but I can't be an "aspie" as I flap with my hands.

I don't want my posts to be too long, so I'll end it here. There will be more posts later. I hope you could understand it. English isn't my native language.
